Cartera Digital pilot project with universities

The Digital Administration General Secretariat (Secretaría General de Administración Digital, SGAD), the Spanish Royal Mint (Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre - Real Casa de la Moneda, FNMT-RCM), Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), Universidad de Murcia (UMU) and Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) have signed a cooperation agreement to carry out a pilot study within the university sphere, providing users with a Digital Wallet containing verifiable credentials to access various services in a simple and secure manner.

This ecosystem is currently restricted to the users of the three universities previously mentioned, and the intention is to assess its future overall implementation. Thus, the experience will help develop a new digital identification model that may be stored in a digital wallet along with other credentials.

FNMT-RCM is in charge of issuing the verifiable identity credentials that enable the development of this pilot project, ensuring the security and reliability of users’ personal data management at all times. In order to obtain identity credentials, users are required to approve a previous video identification process. Apart from the automatic verifications carried out through such process, an asynchronous validation is also required from a video certifying agent. Once the request has been validated by the agent and within up to 48 business hours, the users will receive their verifiable identity credentials in their Digital Wallets.

The system is based on the use of an EBSI-supported blockchain network, all nodes being deployed in FNMT-RCM’s premises.
